Inspiring & Inclusive Childcare in Onehunga
Nurture Early Learning provides high-quality childcare and early education in the heart of Onehunga. Our thoughtfully designed centre offers welcoming, engaging spaces where children feel secure, valued and inspired to learn.
We believe children learn best through meaningful relationships, play, creativity and connection with the world around them. Our experienced teachers take time to listen, observe and understand each child, supporting their individual interests, strengths and development.
At Nurture Onehunga, learning is not limited to planned activities. It happens throughout the day as children explore materials, develop friendships, test ideas, solve problems and contribute to the life of the centre. Our programme brings together social and emotional development, creative learning, environmental awareness and nutrition to support the whole child.
From the moment families enter our Onehunga preschool, they experience a strong sense of warmth, belonging and community. We want every child and whānau to feel known and welcomed, while also having confidence that our programme is intentional, thoughtful and grounded in quality early childhood education.
Children are encouraged to become capable, confident and increasingly independent learners. Through play, collaboration and carefully considered teaching, they develop the skills and dispositions that will support them throughout childhood and beyond.
A Onehunga preschool based on important principles
Nurture preschool Onehunga was founded on four principles that we see as imperative to early education. These include:
Social competency: Children learn about themselves and others through relationships. Our teachers support children to communicate, build friendships, manage strong emotions, work through challenges and develop empathy for others.
Our shared spaces and play environments create opportunities for children to collaborate, contribute ideas and learn how to be part of a community. Teachers remain actively involved, offering guidance and support as children develop confidence and social capability.
Creative based learning: Creativity is central to learning at Nurture. Children are given time, space and access to a wide range of materials so they can explore ideas, represent their thinking and express themselves in different ways.
Through art, construction, imaginative play, movement and project work, children develop curiosity, persistence, critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Rather than focusing on a finished product, we value the thinking, experimentation and discovery that happen throughout the process.
Environmental awareness: We support children to develop a meaningful relationship with the natural world. Through gardening, composting, caring for living things and exploring natural materials, children begin to understand that their actions have an impact.
Environmental learning is woven into everyday experiences, helping children develop responsibility, respect and a sense of connection to their wider community.
Nutrition: Nutrition is an important part of our approach to children’s health and wellbeing. Our food is prepared on site, with a strong focus on fresh, seasonal and nourishing ingredients.
Mealtimes are calm, social experiences where children can enjoy food together, listen to their own hunger and fullness cues, and gradually develop confidence around a wide variety of foods. Our aim is to create positive and lasting relationships with food, rather than teaching children that foods or choices are simply “good” or “bad.”
